- A guard named Fillius hires the Fighters of Darkness to investigate a string of murders along the docks of Oakshore.
- The culprit is Korex the Cunning, an ex-adventurer who commands a growing horde of sewer-dwelling rats with his magic pan flute, the Pipes of Pestilence.
- Deputized by Fillius as temporary members of the Oakshore Guard, the characters question townsfolk and search the dockside neighborhood for clues.
- After reporting their findings to Fillius, the characters set a trap for Korex. They confront Korex when he emerges from the sewers on the night of their investigation.
- Returning from Oakshore the party rests in the woods, noticing a fog rising over the night. In the morning the trees are different. The road winds in a way they don't remember. They arrive at a strange large gate.
